Tips for Preparing for Your First Tax Attorney Meeting

July 24, 2017

Dealing with taxes and meeting with an attorney can be two of the most overwhelming and stressful parts of life. However, with the right legal team, you will find that both taxes and lawyer meetings can be less complicated than you think. Once you have scheduled your tax attorney meeting, make sure you get the most out of your meeting, by starting to prepare for it now. Here are a few tips for preparing for your first meeting.

Organize and Gather Your Tax Information

If you haven’t yet gathered or organized your tax files, it’s a good time to do so before you initial tax attorney meeting. Make sure you have all documents and copies of documents, including any correspondence you have received from the IRS or the state. Also, make sure you have files with receipts and records that you have used to file your taxes. However, because it’s your first meeting, you won’t need to drag along boxes of documentation at this time.

Be Prepared to be Honest

Meeting with your tax attorney is no time to withhold information or get bashful about your finances. It’s important that you are prepared to be honest and share any information your attorney needs. Keep in mind that the attorney is on your side, and in order to get you the best possible outcome, he or she needs you to be completely forthright about your situation.

List of Questions

It’s helpful to prepare a list of questions you want to ask when you meet with your tax lawyer. Some of the questions you might want to add to your list include the following:

How much is the retainer (or attorney’s fees)?

How long will it take to resolve my tax issues?

Is this a situation you have worked with before?

Keep a notebook nearby until your meeting so you can jot down questions as you think of them. This will ensure that you don’t leave the office afterward feeling like you’ve forgotten to ask something.

What Are Your Tax Attorney Meeting Goals?

Before you meet your tax lawyer, you should also ask yourself and consider what your goals are. This way, your attorney can help determine the best way to move forward based on your best interests and wishes. For example, do you want to lower your tax payment? Or are you trying to avoid losing assets? Do you want to make a settlement offer? Although it might seem obvious to you, it’s important to have an idea of how you want to resolve your tax issues.
